What is an over/under total?
An over/under total is a bet on the combined figure in a match (most often the number of goals). The bookmaker sets a line, for example 2.5, and you choose whether the result will be over or under it. Russian-language slips write this as "ТБ" (тотал больше, over) and "ТМ" (тотал меньше, under); in English you will see Over and Under, or O/U.
The advantage of totals is that you don't have to predict which team will win. Instead you assess the character of the game: open, attacking football, or a cautious, tight battle.
Over and under: the main lines

With a half-goal (.5) line there is no push (refund). With a whole-number line, if the result lands exactly on the line, the stake is returned — it is settled at odds of 1.00.
Asian totals: how 2.25 and 2.75 work
An Asian (quarter) total splits your stake into two equal halves. Over 2.25 = half on "over 2" and half on "over 2.5". Over 2.75 = half on "over 2.5" and half on "over 3". Example: a stake of 100 at odds of 1.90.

Other types of totals
- Team total — goals by one team only: "Home team over 1.5" means the home side must score at least 2.
- Half totals — only the first or second half counts.
- Corner totals — around 9–11 per game on average in top leagues, but heavily dependent on each team's style.
- Card totals — the referee and derby factor matter; a red card is usually counted as 2 yellows (check the rules).
- Basketball, tennis and cricket totals — points, games or runs, with lines such as 200.5, 22.5 or 160.5.
How to analyse a total
- Take both teams' average goals scored and conceded over their last 8–10 games (home and away separately).
- Look at xG (expected goals) — it "filters out" lucky goals.
- Check the line-ups: the absence of the main striker or a centre-back directly affects the total.
- Motivation: a mid-table game where "nothing is at stake" and a cup final are two very different games.
- Weather and pitch: heavy rain or snow often slows the game down.
- Compare your estimated probability with the odds — using the formula from the betting odds explained lesson.
From goal stats to probability: a simple example
Suppose the home team scores an average of 1.6 goals at home and the away team scores an average of 1.1 goals on the road. The combined expected goals ≈ 2.7. With an average like that, the Poisson distribution gives a probability of roughly 50% for 3 or more goals. If the bookmaker offers 1.75 on "Over 2.5" (a bookmaker estimate of ≈ 57%), by your calculation that price isn't worth it; at 2.10 (≈ 48%) it becomes more interesting.

This model is very simplified: it doesn't take into account line-ups, motivation or the state of the game. Use it as a starting point for your thinking, not as a final answer.
Typical mistakes with totals
The first mistake is the thought "the last meeting between these teams had 5 goals". A single game is not statistics. The second is raising your stake in live betting to "win back" an over bet when no goals have come. The third is forgetting the margin: in a 1.85 / 1.85 market the margin is ≈ 8%, while at 1.95 / 1.95 it is ≈ 2.6%. Compare which bookmaker gives the better price on which total.
