What is handicap betting?
Handicap betting (in Russian "фора") gives one of the teams a virtual head start or deficit. When the match ends, you apply the handicap to the score and re-evaluate the result. For example, if a heavy favourite is priced at 1.25 to win, "Team 1 (−1.5)" might be a far more interesting 2.10 — but now the team has to win by at least two goals.
On bet slips, H1 (or "Team 1") is the handicap for the first (home) team and H2 is for the second (away) team. A minus sign means goals are subtracted; a plus sign means they are added.
How a handicap is settled: key examples
| Bet | Score 2:1 | Score 1:1 | Score 1:2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| H1 (−1.5) | 0.5:1 — lost | −0.5:1 — lost | lost |
| H1 (−0.5) | 1.5:1 — won | lost | lost |
| H1 (−1) | 1:1 — refunded | lost | lost |
| H2 (+1.5) | 2:2.5 — won | won | won |
| H2 (+0.5) | lost | 1:1.5 — won | won |
Note: H1 (−0.5) is the same as a plain "home win", and H2 (+0.5) is the same as "X2" (away team doesn't lose). With a whole-number handicap (−1, +1), if the result is a draw after applying the handicap, the stake is refunded.
European handicap vs Asian handicap
A European handicap (three-way) uses whole numbers only and has a separate bet on the draw. For example, "Team 1 (−1)", "Draw (−1)" and "Team 2 (+1)". If the home team wins by exactly 1 goal (2:1), "Draw (−1)" wins and the other two lose — there is no refund.
An Asian handicap is two-way: there is no draw option. It comes in whole, half and quarter values (0.25, 0.75). With a whole value there can be a refund, while with a quarter value your stake is split into two equal parts.
| Feature | European handicap | Asian handicap |
|---|---|---|
| Number of outcomes | 3 (1, X, 2 with handicap) | 2 |
| Values | Whole numbers only: −1, −2, +1 | 0, ±0.25, ±0.5, ±0.75, ±1 ... |
| Refunds | No | Yes, on whole and quarter values |
| Margin | Usually higher | Usually lower |
Quarter handicaps: −0.75 and +0.25 examples
Stake 100, odds 1.95. H1 (−0.75) = half on H1 (−0.5), half on H1 (−1). H2 (+0.25) = half on H2 (0), half on H2 (+0.5).
| Bet | Result | Settlement | Total returned |
|---|---|---|---|
| H1 (−0.75) | Home team wins by 2 goals | Both halves win | 195 |
| H1 (−0.75) | Home team wins 1:0 | −0.5 wins: 97.50 + −1 refunded: 50 | 147.50 |
| H1 (−0.75) | Draw | Both halves lose | 0 |
| H2 (+0.25) | Draw | 0 refunded: 50 + +0.5 wins: 97.50 | 147.50 |
| H2 (+0.25) | Away team loses by 1 goal | Both halves lose | 0 |
When does a handicap make sense?
- A clear favourite at short odds: use H1 (−1) or H1 (−1.5) to get a better price — but check whether the team has a habit of winning by narrow margins.
- An underdog that defends well: options such as H2 (+1.5) or Asian +1.
- Evenly matched teams: Asian handicap 0 (DNB — Draw No Bet, stake refunded on a draw).
A handicap depends on the goal difference, so also look at the teams' over/under totals: in low-scoring games, big handicaps rarely come in. Converting odds into probability is covered in the betting odds explained lesson, and a full review of football markets is on our how to bet on football page.
Handicap vs 1X2: comparing prices
The same view can be expressed through different markets, and their prices differ. Say you believe "the home team won't lose". You can back this with "1X" (double chance) or Asian "H1 (+0.5)" — both win on exactly the same results. If one bookmaker offers 1.40 on 1X and 1.44 on Asian H1 (+0.5), the second is the better deal. In the same way, for "home win, stake back on a draw", use Asian handicap 0 and compare it with the plain home-win price.
| Your view | Standard market | Handicap equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Home team wins | 1 | H1 (−0.5) |
| Home team doesn't lose | 1X | H1 (+0.5) |
| Home team wins, refund on a draw | DNB | Asian H1 (0) |
The difference looks small, but over hundreds of bets it is exactly these details that change the result.
